Mining + Jewelcrafting question

Hi guys,

currently im doing the gathering profesisons (mining/skinning) in a new server and have gotten about 500 gold at level 39. not bad, but would like to know when is a good time to switch over to jewelcrafting. need to know mainly for cutting gems. i dont know if any of the rings/necklaces sell well, and i know those trinkets are BoP only (bummer), so i figured maybe i can wait til later to level up jewelcrafting. my question is when will be a good time to switch so i can get decent benefits and gold from it through selling gems or making accessories, or just prospecting ores?

right now mining iron is green to me, and mithril is yellow or orange. not sure. and i know to get to higher level nodes, i'd need to be higher level. i can work on all this.|||In my opinion, keep gathering until at least 70...Start jewelcrafting after you have your flying mount, and maybe also your epic flyer.

You can make money prospecting, but mainly with much higher level ore than you can presently get.|||ahhh.. i see. i can do that. i make quite a bit of gold already with my professions, so i dont think i really need jewelcrafting really. its just a personal achievement for me. but i'll wait til 70 and epic flyer to change then. i'd like to keep mining since it is the source for jewelcrafting.

im just glad (and surprised) to see that coarse stones sell so well.|||Iron Ore is nice enough to prospect, but Fel Iron Ore and Adamantite Ore are very much preferable.

Also, keep in mind that most of the gemcutting designs are rare world drops, making them incredibly expensive. Those that aren't, require rep in some way (such as the Consortium). In other words, unless you're really set to it you don't want to level jc right now to be able to cut gems. Sure, it's nice to be able to make your own jewels, since you can hardly get those as a quest reward.. but it gets really expensive later on.|||what exactly can i get from iron?

i think i'll pump some money into the economy once i switch to jewelcrafting and buy ores all the way up to iron. i might just wanna mine my own mithril and up.|||Quote:

You've got to be kidding me. O_o

I am on my first character (46 NE druid) and got herbalism and alchemy at level five. I barely have 18g. Herbs don't sell for anything on my server... Although I was lucky enough to have the Swiftness Potion recipe from a drop in Darkshore. Think I should switch over to mining/skinning seeing as alchemy doesn't net much money?|||Quote:

Hm, I don't know exactly, but it's gems like Citrine, Star Ruby, Aquamarine, Lesser Moonstone - I've got Auctioneer, which has a part called Enchantrix that gives info in the tooltip on what an item will disenchant/prospect in, and what percentage the odds are for each (that really helps a lot when, for instance, I want to buy cheap items to get some heaps of Illusion Dust). Mithril has the same kind of gems as iron, only higher odds on the better gems. Fel Iron Ore prospects into the basig green Outland gems, such as Blood Garnet and Azure Moonstone, with a small chance of getting a random blue gem like Talasite or Dawnstone. Adamantite Ore nets the same gems as Fel Iron, but has a slightly increased chance of containing a blue gem - and I'm not sure, but it also seems like that ore contains 2 green gems more often than Fel Iron does.

And I honestly wouldn't drop mining, should you have been considering that. Not only because it complements jc so well (I sometimes wish I had it, even though I can't and won't drop tailoring), but also because you can make a great profit by selling stacks of ore (or, in the lower levels, bars) and save a few for your jc.. I know I spent quite a lot of gold buying my mats off the AH, or buying stacks of ore to prospect into gems I could cut for levelling. What do you think it feels like to be well in your 70s and only have 30g on hand?|||Quote:

i find that herbalism makes decent money later on in the game, say at least level 40 when you're picking khadgar whiskars, goldthorn, and even more when you pick golden sansam, purple lotus, etc.

also keep in mind briarthorn and swiftthistle. briarthorn has more uses than mageroyal, at that level, and swifthistle is in high demand due to the rarity plus many uses it has. you get this from mageroyal and briarthorn nodes. oh and dont forget what most people forget in low levels... stranglekelp.

i see.. thanks so much for the info! yes, im keeping mining! there's no way im letting that go. and i'll never be a level 70 with only 30 gold. maybe after i buy my epic flyer. haha.|||Quote:

Yes.

If you want money, alchemy is not on the path.|||Quote:

Ha, that's what I thought as well. I spend my gold these days on:

- buying 'bargain' jc designs off the AH (har, bargain.. even if it saves me 80g on the design, it still costs me a few hundred g)

- buying the Netherweb Spider Silk and some pieces of Shadowcloth for my FSW set (I already bought the Primal Waters a while ago, when I could get 30 for 15g off the price each)

- buying Mercurial Adamantite, Eternium Ore/Bars, and Fel Iron/Adamantite Ore to get mats for levelling my jc

- buying Illusion Dust for my enchanting alt, who only needs 4 more points to reach 300 so that she'll be able to sell Lifestealing and Crusader enchants

A few days ago I was given 1000g by a friend who was quitting WoW, and I thought that I'd finally come close to my epic flyer this time.. yeah, sure. Fat chance. If I recall correctly, I've got some 1300g on my main at the moment.. never been higher than 2100g, so that epic flyer will be a long way off for me.
