[:1]Ok, firstly. Throw whatever you can at me for not knowing this about gems - yes rocks, solfuric acid, your neighbours ugly child ANYTHING you want!
I did know prior to last night that you can socket ANY colored Gem in ANY colored socket! Janfader = failure
I've been recently down on my DPS specs because I just couldn't hit that .5 extra K or sometimes a whole extra 1K dps to that of my other "same" class/spec guildies. Then I started looking closely at their gear and wondering to myself "holy @#$%, all +20str in every socket for the new tier 10 gear".... Must be really nice. Then I got my Teir 10 pieces and it wasn't all Red Sockets... WTF. How the hell does so and so have Red gems in different colored sockets?
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Then I learnt alll about you can equip whatever Gem you want in any colored socket.
So far I've dodged Flames, gas can, bullets, dump truck, piles of poo, road kill, runescape the game, some guys girlfriend, tire iron, wrench and broken glass.
Please throw more stuff at me|||This is not exactly true. In a red socket, you can equip a red gem, or gems of the color containing red, ie. Purple and Orange. Or Prismatic, of course. But you can't socket a green gem in it.
Quick rundown:
Yellow socket: Yellow, Orange or Green (purple doesn't contain yellow)
Blue socket: Blue, Green or Purple (orange doesn't contain blue)
Red socket: Red, Orange or Purple (green doesn't contain red)
Prismatics fit in every slot.
Note that meta gem requirements are quite easily met this way. They don't require the actual gems, but more like the actual slots being filled. This means you can fulfill a meta gem requirement of two Blues with a Green and a Purple gem, for instance, provided that they are both equipped in a blue slot.|||Quote:

Sorry Snow, IF you have a Blue socket, you can epuip a Red into it. Meta's are different entirly. The only benefit of putting the proper colored Gem into the socket is for the bonus.|||Oh, right. Bah. What's the use of having different colors to collect then? Was it always like this, or is that another change to make the game easier?|||you can equip them into different coloured sockets, but as far as I know, you won't get any bonuses from gems that are in the wrong coloured socket.|||Quote:
Oh, right. Bah. What's the use of having different colors to collect then? Was it always like this, or is that another change to make the game easier?
I know for sure it wasn't always like this. I can't tell you when Blizzard decided to allow for a Red into a Yellow/Blue socket. Typicially the bonus will never be better than going all out I.E +20 Agil, +20 Str etc... Very rare you will find the bonus of the socket's out performing the above.
Essentially on my Ret Pally, all Sockets not red (+20 str) I would sub in the best gem of it's color being purple, green etc.
Now that my whole socket system consists of Red Gems @ +20 Str and a blue here and there to get my Helmet socket to kick in... I do wonders now in my dps. Currently at 5.1K on average over 10 instances (5 man roics).|||You could ALWAYS socket any colour gem in any colour socket. People don't becase they want the socket bonus but as the higher stat gems become more common, the bonus becomes less beneficial.
Don't forget that the epic gems used to be damn hard to get so +16 was the norm.|||Quote:

Odd Erinion, I remember "You cannot eqiup this gem into this socket" messages when TBC came out. Perhap I was doing something wrong.
However, now things a rolling much smoother. Dps is kicking, and now to re-gem my other 8 lvl 80's alliance toons... God help me.|||Quote:

Maybe I'm wrong then - but I do think that now we can get epic gems much easier, the set bonuses are "diluted".|||I recall that also, and that it was quickly dis-proven by in game actions, i.e. socketing gems of the wrong color. I think in the original plans Bliz had intended to disallow the mis-socketing of gems but either when TBC was released or very shortly thereafter, that it was changed. That was how our Kara tanks got all their health, by stacking up stamina gems regardless of the color called for by the socket.

No more Armorsmithing or Weaponsmithing?
[:1]If you are levelling a Blacksmith, there comes a time in SW where the trainer asks you which of the two specialties you'd like to follow. He then suggests two trainers (one in SW and one in IF) to go to for training. This used to involve a quest where you had to make certain items and turn them in to the trainer. Now, though, both trainers only offer the same plans every other trainer does. Is this a bug or did Blizzard just forget to change it?|||I believe they were both removed in Cata.|||Quote:
I believe they were both removed in Cata.
OK, thanks. Guess they removed the profession specialties but forgot to change the speech you get from the trainer.|||Low priority, it will probably be added somewhere in a next patch.

Best professions for Hunter class -- ???
[:1]Hi guys, im a Troll Hunter. I was wondering what 2 professions are good for me to train in. Please leave a reply :)|||As a Hunter, you basically can't go wrong with skinning and leatherworking. Or two gathering professions if you are into getting money fast - although money usually isn't a problem if you don't spend it too lightly. If you're going with crafting professions, Blacksmithing and Tailoring aren't really viable.|||What Snowie said is very true, but I tend to go a slightly different route :-)
With new chars, I always take mining and herbing - there are several professions that need the mats and you have the added bonus of getting semi-decent experience for gathering (this isn't the case with skinning)
Depending on the final professions that I want the char to have, I might keep some of the mats in the bank to speed level the profession, otherwise just sell stuff as I get it. If you don't have a gathering profession that can be used like that, you will have more than enough gold to buy whatever you need at the time.|||i think skinning until 40 then if u want to make a lot of gold do herbalism

best professions for a mage?
[:1]what are the best pros for a gnome mage? im lvl 14|||Tailoring and enchanting.|||Well personaly i dont really like enchanting... I'm no WoW master or anithing but:
If this is yer first and futur main character you might want to wait up befor starting enchanting because enchanting means alot of investment at the begining... maybe later on it makes alot of profit (i wouldn't know) but at first you have to sacrifice the green items you get as loot to disenchant and all that.
That's my personnal oppinion and maybe I'm completely rong|||Would def recommend tailoring, lots of cool stuff now. Plus end game epics / big bags etc. The spellfire and shadoweave sets are as good as a lot of mages will ever get.
I chose a gathering skill for my 2nd, on the basis i can make my armor, i need some cash now. Enchanting would have been good, but our guild already had two high level enchanters when i started wow, so i don't miss it.|||Two gathering proffesions until you get level 60ish and then drop one for Tailoring. You need mount money and Tailoring probably isn't your best bet.
Tailoring is a must have at 70 but it means little to nothing at low levels. If you really need a new item, you can buy it with the extra money you are making by having the extra gathering profession. But buying items that will be obsolete in a few levels isn't too smart imo.|||im gonna go with tailoring/enchanting also
They are the best professions to have, maybe not to make money but best to have to gear yourself up.|||Quote:

true but leveling it is just a pain in the butt. its probably easier to level it as you level. plus the bags are always nice.|||I agree, for a mage is best Tailor/Enchanter, u dont have to level ASAP Enchantin, and easily without investment can reach level 70 skill just Disenchantin the stuff u craft with yer Tailor Profession. Mats from Disenchanted items sells well, and usually get higuer profit then if not Disenchanted, also the plus that if mats dont sell AH no charge.
From arly levels to 60 you will be changin constantly your gear, that means lot of incomin mats.|||I thought Herb/Alchamey was best for mages? I'm a lvl 26 mage I've made some money selling herbs and potions plus the potions I actually use like Trolls Blood, Healing, Fire, etc... Is Herb/Alchamey better for lower lvls and tailoring better for higher levels?|||Go with mining/skinning until you are 60ish then drop one of them for tailoring. I am not one to advise to level enchanting as I believe the return on it is very minimal. There are only 2 bop enchants that I know of and they are very small. You can get all your gear enchanted by someone with 5-10g per enchant tip which even if you get all your gear enchanted 10x is far less than it would take you to level. You will NOT be able to DE soulbound items. That is the #1 drawback. But honestly, when an item vendors for 7g and de value is 11 that isn't much difference, especially if you take into consideration what it costs to level enchanting AND the loss of income from a gathering profession. Any friendly enchanter in your guild will be more than glad to DE boe items for you i am sure. When I log in each day I have no less than 7-10 items to de for people in my mailbox, just part of being friendly with the guildmates.
I would suggest tailoring/mining. Mining is a good profession for $$ and many of the materials you will need for tailoring high end items will come directly from your efforts in mining (primal fire anyone?) Anyhow, thats my 2 cp.

Engineering...any good?
[:1]Looking for another prof to change to as I have several with the same gathering skills.
I will be changing my warriors Skinning to BS to complement its Mining but that still leaves three profs I don't have.
Engineering
Jewelcrafting
Leatherworking
I don't have any leather wearers and have no idea if LW makes any money on my server, so was leaning more towards JC and Eng.
Is Eng any good for PVE, I believe a lot of the stuff you make is only usable by other Engineers so is it a profitable skill at any point?
So that leaves JC which I did start (barely) once, but dropped as it was too expensive to train at the time.
Forgot to add is Eng better for a certain class?|||Engineering is good because it gives you more abilities that are often situational (such as a net trinket, items that reduce an opponent's damage, speed boosts, parachutes, and straight up damage/healing/absorbtion, etc.).
The money-makers for this profession have essentially vanished in Cataclysm. Ammo has been done away with, and gas clouds don't seem to exist in the new zones (not that I've seen at least), so that leaves guns/bows, scopes, and Outland/Northrend elemental gas clouds as the money makers. The market itself for such items is rather... lacking, but it may depend on your server. People just aren't as likely to buy ranged weapons/scopes pre-level cap since quest gear is so nice, and the dungeon finder makes it easy enough to get rare loot.
All in all, its not very profitable now compared to other professions that can craft a wider variety of items to sell.
Jewelcrafting is probably the most lucrative of the three you listed, as it crafts items that all classes can use, and gems which people are always needing/replacing/changing out (and also giving you special, usually epic-level gems and nice trinkets for your own use). Aside from the rings/amulets, knowing the gem market is similar to knowing the glyph market for what sells best.
Leatherworking is a bit limited as it makes leather and mail items, but it also has the leg armors which are big sellers.|||You can make not only the CATA version of the epic head gear plus some high end pre epic ranged weapons, however these require you to complete level 85 heroics in order to get the needed Chaos Orbs.
The items are steep in price because of the mats you'll need (including Truegold), so depending on your server, there may or may not be a market.
You can still do scopes other things....|||My approach is to have enough gold to buy stuff I want or need, but I'm not getting any high score obsession. I know that there are people who have set themselves the goal to get max gold, but this aspect of the game doesn't interest me.
Of all the professions, I found JC to be the one that brings in the highest return for the least effort. Also, I didn't find it expensive to level - took mining as the other prof and switched to engineering when I started serious raiding on that char.
All I do with the JC char is to do the daily for the token and then buy whatever cuts are decent sellers (which is a bit hard now, as so many people are levelling JC, the cut items are significantly cheaper than the uncut ones). Once a day, I get the stuff from the mailbox that didn't sell and relist them. The cut gems that did sell (and aren't stupidly cheap) get cut again and listed. All in all, 10 minutes max per day and the gold flows in nicely.
The nice thing about JC is that every race and class uses them and when gear gets replaced, the need is there again (if it has a socket, of course !). Serious raider don't care what the best gems cost and just buy them.
In contrast with engineering, which is a so-called fun profession. Once I had levelled that to 525 (on the same char that has JC, btw), I wondered why I had bothered. Seemed to me to be a waste of time and effort (not to mention gold).
Apologies for rambling - tldr: JC will make a ton more gold than engineering.|||You're losing money with Eng because you don't have Mining, it's a direct support to Engineering. Or more to the point, with mining, you don't have to buy most of the mats you need as you can get them through mining.|||Eng does kinda strike me as a moneysink, probably why I never tried it.
I'm not that bothered if it isn't hugely profitable, but if you can at least break even as you level or know that after a certain point you will start to gain it back would be rather nice.|||You can make cash with Engineering...just just have to be aware of how to do it. I did it in WOTLK with motes in addition to selling ore I mined.
In CATA, I'm getting Volatile Airs while mining due to one of the Engineering items that just sits in my inventory.
Scopes and weapons are good too, not to mention non combat pets.|||The thing with with Engineering right now is that since they did away with gas clouds, the only way to get the extra volatile airs is if you have a gathering profession as well. So, if you aren't pairing it with mining, I'd be less inclined to take it at this point.
It is a fun profession, but honestly, having a JCer is more useful in my experience.
The problem with the fun stuff from professions is that Blizzard has a very annoying habit of breaking the fun stuff when people complain about it giving some minisule advantage in PvP. (Which is really dumb since they already don't allow the stuff in Arena and rated BGs. Yes, I'm still very bitter of them breaking Free Action Potions.)|||Quote:

Sorry to be pedantic, but if you made gold selling mined ore, you didn't make it as an engineer :-)
I think the thing that causes it to be a gold-sink atm is the fact that people are still levelling up the prof and selling stuff in higher amounts than the demand.
Sure, scopes can sell and I think I made more in engineering with the mote extractor and from pets. Now that zapthrottle's gadget is no use, it seems kinda sad that engineering is reduced to making pets.|||While other professions are more useful in terms of stats and earning gold, Engineering has the lol factor which cannot be discounted. For those wondering, the youtube vids are nicely done - clearly spoken and easy to understand. Didn't check the blogs though (sorry).
There is just one small thing that I would like to ask, concerning the way in whioch you determine profit. As I understand it, you check the lowest price on the AH for your mats and then the finished item price. One minus the other is profit (minus AH cut).
Here's where I think you could trip up. The lowest AH price isn't necessarily what you will buy ALL your mats for. To give an exaggerated example, the lowest price for item X is 1g, and you need 5. However, the remaining 4 are all 100g each. This will skew your calcluation and screw your profit.
I'm sure you could check further, and that the time required probably isn't worth it, as this scenario is unlikely. I suspect that the answer is this pragmatic approach, but would be interested to see your thoughts on this.
Thanks for making these vids.|||Quote:

That's generally how I look at it. I may end up making a bit less profit than I was intending, but I generally don't chase Gold opportunities unless I can see significant results from them. That being said, if I make a few less Gold than I was planning, I should still come out with a respectable amount of Gold when I finish.
Oh, and we've got one more video! The blog post is very helpful, too :)

I have been looking to get 'into' the Auction House properly for a long time.. and this is a really good way of doing so.
I love the spreadsheets you have made, this makes everything so much easier!!
In short.. worth checking these videos/blogs out if u want to use your professions to make some money and play the AH.
Well done, and keep up the good work :D|||I was surprised to see that you used the uncommon gems to make rare gems - on my server, shadowspirits are much more valuable and flexible (and cheaper to make).
Also, for enchanting mats, 48 hours usually costs the same as 12 ;-)
ps: would also like to recommend the addon skillet
pps: was 'amused' to watch the trade chat on your server - Alliance side seems to be full of childish idiots ...
ppps: the rings and amulets that JC can make should be put on the AH first. Especially the sub lvl 80 ones - lvl 79 twinks are prepared to pay well over 100g for decent bling.|||Normally I'm a bit apprehensive of new users posting youtube video's, but indeed, these are very informational and well done... Might make it a sticky if it gets pushed down too much.|||Quote:

Making Gold With Enchanting - Disenchanting with Auctioneer
-Associated Blog Post
First off, I've been playing World of Warcraft for over 4 years. Over that time, I've amassed a good deal of knowledge about the game and have finally decided to share those ideas with those who can use them - gamers!
I've decided to share these in 2 forms - print and video. The videos are meant to be the focal point with the Blog Posts serving to give additional information on the subject, links to addons, macros, etc.
I hope you guys like them and look forward to new posts in the upcoming days / weeks!

Thanks for making these vids.|||Quote:

I have looked at most of the videos and blogs, and as previously stated they are all well done, and very clear in the information they present. I liked them so much i subscribed to his youtube channel ;)
