[:1]My Hunter is almost lvl 40. So far I've used Skinning and Mining to earn some money.
I intended to replace Mining with Skinning, but now I'm starting to think: from lvl 40 a Hunter can equip mail - so should I go for Mining + Blacksmithing instead?
I know that leatherworking at later levels creates mail armor - but is this as good as the ones made by Blacksmiths?|||As Paladins and Warriors start to wear plate from level 40, and Death Knights wear plate as well, Blacksmithing after level 40 concentrates on making plate instead of mail. So, Leatherworking, hands down. Blacksmithing is almost useless to a Hunter.|||Quote:

I didn't know that Blacksmithing focuses on Plate. OK - Leatherworking it is.|||Quote:

I would revise your statement. Blacksmithing changes its primary crafted item type from mail to plate to follow the warrior and paladin classes who start wearing mail and switch to plate at that same time.
Leatherworking adds mail armor to its list of crafted items, as it tracks along with hunters and shamans. Rogues and druids still have leather armor options.
The next question is which LW spec? I think dragonscale was the preferred type for hunters, but I don't know if the work required to get the spec and gather the materials to make the armor is worth it, with the decreased amount of xp required to level now, plus a lack of over level 60 items from it (correct?).
You may want to stay with 2 gathering professions, keep earning money, and buy that item or two that you do not get from questing in Outlands.|||Quote:

Yeah I don't intend to switch from Mining to Leatherworking the moment I reach lvl 40. As long as I'm fine with the equipment I'll probably stick with 2 gathering profs.
Which specialization to go with - I haven't looked at that yet, will do so when I get there.|||Definitely go with leatherworking...the mail that blacksmiths can make for lvl 40+ is nowhere near what a LW can make. And the crafter-only-use patches you can make at the top level are definitely worth leveling the profession all the way.|||Quote:

Would you say hunters benefit from LW more than rogues do? I haven't felt that much of a benefit, since there tends to be a glut of the good armor on the AH (on my server) and gathering the materials is rather simple if a commission is needed.|||Quote:

hmmmm...that's a tough one.
My first character all the way to 80 was a hunter with skinning and LW. (For the pure immersion into the game, those just seem to go together.)
While my rogue has benefitted from the gear my LW could make and mail over, I can see where the rogue would get more benefit from the LW-only-patches. Not that the hunter doesn't benefit, just that the rogue could have used it more. (It's a small point and not enough to drop 405 tailoring on my rogue just to take up LW)
I guess a lot of it also depends on what's available for the 2 classes on the AH on any particular server.|||Honestly, making the money first THEN getting the profession is my suggestion... Maybe once you hit 66 or so, then go LW or BS, cause I believe both have pretty awesome mail pieces.|||Quote:

I would disagree on the waiting...only because you can gear yourself quite well with LW as a hunter NOW (at 40) and on up.
If you're already skinning, most of the mats you would need for gear recipes are in the area you are leveling in (or near) anyway. Sure you will spend some gold here and there on skilling up LW, but you would end up spending more if you have to buy your gear on the AH.
It's also more game friendly to level up your profession as you level your character. There's nothing more annoying than trying to do "kill x number of y" or "gather x number of y" quests in a level 35 zone only to have some level 80 come through and kill everything in sight because they decided to power-level their skinning.
